Take a day and take your pick from a number of well-established gardens in the Hauraki and Coromandel region; reflective of the sub-tropical environment and weather systems, our gardens emphasise creative and innovative use of water, landscaping and New Zealand native flora.

As you might expect, gardens are often seasonal. So please check opening times when you are planning your visit.

Option 1: Near Thames

Ngātea Water Gardens are an unexpected treat for travellers passing through Ngātea on State Highway 2. Situated only 1 hour from Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga and Coromandel, they are also a fun day trip destination. The picturesque 5-acre property has funny signs and scenes throughout and is complete with a gift shop, playground, and function centre for weddings and other occasions.

Located 30 minutes north of Thames on the Tapu-Coroglen Road, Rapaura Water Gardens is a New Zealand "Garden of National Significance" that was established in 1964. Nestled on 26 hectares of award-winning paradise, Rapaura is far more than ‘just a garden', it is a living, breathing destination where man and land come together in one unforgettable escape.

Wander through lush, layered gardens and follow the gentle bush walk that winds its way to the magical Seven Stairs to Heaven waterfall. The path is rewarding yet accessible, perfect for stretching the legs and filling the soul with calm. Rapaura also offers a cafe serving light meals and boutique accommodation; when the gates close at 5pm, resident guests enjoy the estate to themselves. Come for the gardens, stay for the magic.

Tucked away in the serene Tapu Valley, Mahara Sculpture Park and Pottery is a captivating blend of curated gardens and natural wilderness. Founded by Heather Chesterman, this 10-acre retreat showcases unique pottery, diverse artworks, and tranquil walking trails, offering a peaceful escape where art and nature intertwine to inspire and rejuvenate.

Option 2: Near Waihī

The Waihī Butterfly Garden is a peaceful retreat, bursting with life in the warmer months. Monarch butterflies flutter through lush garden paths, creating a magical setting for a stroll or family picnic. Maintained by dedicated volunteers, it’s a wonderful place for kids and nature lovers to enjoy the beauty of the seasons.

At the Waihī Lavender Farm, you will have the opportunity to stroll through the purple fields and learn more about the multiple benefits of the flowers. Sweet floral lavender has many functional properties, apart from smelling so good. It's known to be an effective calming agent, and its antibacterial properties make it helpful in treating skin irritations, eczema and fungal infections. The farm shop has skin care products and soy candles, plus spectacular blueberry lavender ice cream! Open in season, early December through to mid-January.

The Waterworks is a delightfully fun garden the entire family will be sure to enjoy.  With over 70 water-powered attractions to look at, play on or interact with, The Waterworks is a ‘Coromandel-style’ amusement park in a vast garden setting.  A true place of discovery, you will be fascinated by the ingenuity of the water attractions, enchanted by the quirky art and sculpture, and soothed by the tranquillity of the native foliage growing throughout the property.

While at The Waterworks take a short drive down the 309 Road to visit the Kauri Grove and Falls. If time permits you might also like to head into Coromandel Town for a visit through the 1.6-hectare predator-free fenced wildlife sanctuary and sculpture park at  Driving Creek
