DAY 1: WAIHI TO PAEROA – GOLD & GORGE ADVENTURE
Morning: Hauraki Rail Trail Ride – Waihī to Karangahake Gorge
- Start your morning in Waihī or Paeroa by hiring bikes from Hauraki Bike Hire or Jolly Bikes.
- Cycle the scenic stretch of the Hauraki Rail Trail to the Karangahake Gorge.
- Along the way, explore:
- The Windows Walk (an easy, photogenic loop through mining tunnels and sheer cliffs, remember to look up to see glowworms).
- Owharoa Falls – perfect for a quick refresh.
- Optional add-on: ride through the Karangahake Tunnel — torch required!
Lunch:
- Stop at the historic Waikino Station Café, Waikino Pub or a riverside picnic spot in the gorge. Falls Retreat is a great option, depending on the day.
Afternoon: Gold Discovery
- Make your way to Waihī and visit the Gold Discovery Centre for an interactive take on mining past and present.
- Book a Gold Mine Tour and descend into the operational Martha Mine pit or explore relics from the surface.

DAY 2: NATURE MEETS HERITAGE – PAEROA TO THAMES VIA RAIL TRAIL
Morning: Cycle or Transfer to Thames (Paeroa to Thames leg)
- Continue the Hauraki Rail Trail to Thames (34km), or take a transfer if preferred.
- The trail offers open countryside, rural charm, and river views — a relaxed and scenic journey.
Midday: Discover Thames' Gold Story
- Visit:
- The Thames School of Mines – a fascinating insight into NZ’s early scientific and mining education.
- The Thames Goldmine Experience – with working stamper batteries and underground tunnels (day depending).
- Lunch in Thames (many dining establishments to choose from).
Afternoon Option:
Option A: The Pinnacles Hike (overnight or short walk)
- If you’re keen for a more active finish:
- Drive (or transfer) to the Kauaeranga Valley.
- Choose a short walk (Billygoat Landing or Kauri Dam) or begin the Pinnacles Track overnight hike (staying at the Pinnacles Hut).
Option B: Explore Thames and the Thames Coast
- Visit Awildian Gin and sample award winning local gin.
- Meander through Rapaura Watergardens where art meets nature.
