In The Coromandel the heavens appear very close to earth because our small villages shed very little light on the dark night sky.

Galaxies of stars, far-off planets, passing satellites and shooting stars are often clearly visible for those who stay up to watch the night show unfold.  Pull up a chair, stretch out on the grass or lay back in the sand for your evening's entertainment, almost anywhere is good.

The night skies north of Whitianga are especially black, and our people in Kūaotunu, Opito Bay, Otama and Ring’s Beach are working toward an official Dark Sky Community, to preserve the darkness forever.
